Chapter 16 Summary

Red is pleased to hear that Chloe wants him and realizes that his goal is to make her happy. Sensing that Chloe’s fibromyalgia is causing her pain, he begins tidying her apartment for her. Chloe tells him he does not need to and that he need not stay but he says, “I booked you” (241) for the evening and that he intends to stay. Red notes that Chloe seems to be feeling better and she reveals that she is wearing a buprenorphine patch to ease the pain. Red asks if Chloe has eaten and she coyly admits that she has not eaten today. Red jumps to begin cooking for her despite Chloe’s protestations.

In the kitchen, Chloe tries to convince Red that he does not need to cook for her, but he finally silences her. Chloe thanks Red. Red begins cooking and asks where Smudge is. Chloe admits that she returned Smudge a few days earlier. Knowing how difficult this is for Chloe, Red rushes to her, takes her in his arms, and kisses the top of her head. Chloe tells Red about how strange Annie was in their brief encounter, and that she gave Chloe her business card.
