Plot Summary
Book two in the Highlands’ Lairds trilogy, Ransom is the 1999 historical romance novel written by American author Julie Garwood. Set in London and Scotland in the thirteenth century, the story follows Lady Gillian, a powerless child whose world is upended when the ruthless Baron Alford slays her father and rips her family asunder. Years later, when Alford goes in search of a golden jewelry box on behalf of the tyrannical King John, Gillian takes the opportunity to find her missing sister and avenge her father’s death. Along the way, Gillian enlists handsome Scottish warriors Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan to help her find love and the courage to fight back and defeat Baron Alford. Ransom became a New York Times bestseller that has been called “an enthralling tale” by Romantic Times, as well as “wonderful…provides suspense, passion, and humor” by All About Romance. Ransom follows The Secret and precedes Shadow Music in Garwood’s trilogy.

Narrated in the omniscient third-person perspective, the story begins eight years after the events in The Secret. King Richard I rules the throne of England. One evening in Dunhanshire during the thirteenth century, a young girl named Gillian is awoken in the middle of the night by her father. A ruthless general named Alford the Red of Lockmiere and his men have infiltrated Gillian’s home with the intent to rob an invaluable golden jewelry box. The box once belonged to King John’s beloved Arianna, whom Gillian’s father killed some time before. When Gillian’s father catches wind of the invasion, he sends his four children, including Gillian, away from the property with the jewelry box in tow. Gillian’s father tells the children they must keep the box a hidden secret. In the commotion, Gillian is separated from her sister, Christian. While Christian escapes, Gillian is apprehended and brought back to Alford the Red’s castle. Alford captures the city of Dunhanshire and slays Gillian’s father in front of her eyes. Afterwards, Alford consigns Gillian to live with her uncle, Morgan Chapman, at his manor in Northern England.

Fourteen years pass, during which Gillian is raised by her uncle and matures into a brave, beautiful, and kindhearted young woman. Lady Gillian is summoned back to Dunhanshire, where she becomes acquainted with a kidnapped five-year-old boy named Alec Maitland. Gillian attempts to aide Alec in his escape, but fails to do so at first. After Alec plummets into a gorge and Gillian rescues him, they are captured by Alford’s men and taken back to the castle. Once there, Alford the Red, now Baron Alford, orders Gillian to venture to the Scottish highlands on a quest to retrieve the golden jewelry box taken from her family years prior. The box has since been named Arianna’s treasure and declared the property of King John. Gillian must find Christian, whom Baron Alford believes is in possession of the box. Gillian departs from the holding cell, taking Alec with her in order to keep him alive.

When she arrives in Scotland, Gillian calls out to Alec’s guardian, a man named Laird Brodick Buchanan. Brodick is a strong, attractive and gallant warrior chieftain who has a hot-temper and stubborn attitude. Still, Brodick shows signs of being a fair and noble man. Gillian solicits Brodick’s help in returning Alec home safely. Brodick agrees and soon introduces Gillian to Alec’s father, Laird Iain Maitland. Along the way, Gillian and Brodick begin to fall in love with each other. One day, Brodick fools Gillian into marrying him by having a priest clandestinely wed them. Gillian thinks the blessing merely meant engagement to wed, but learns later they’re already married. Gillian also meets a dashing Scottish warrior named Laird Ramsey Sinclair. Like Brodick, Ramsey has been trained by Iain Maitland to become a warrior chief. Unlike Brodick however, Ramsey is kind, amiable and able to temper his emotions. After making their acquaintances, Brodick and Ramsey demand that Gillian give up the names of the English barons so they can avenge Alec’s kidnapping. Gillian declines to name names because her uncle Morgan is being held for ransom by Baron Alford, and will not spare his life until Gillian returns with Christian and Arianna’s treasure.

A secondary romance takes place between Ramsey and a member of the Sinclair clan, Bridgid KirkConnell. Bridgid’s father was promised by Ramsey’s father that she would be allowed to marry any man of her choice. Many suitors ask for her hand in marriage, but Bridgid vows to wait until she finds someone she truly loves to marry. Ramsey falls in love with Bridgid, despite nearly being forced to marry a MacPherson woman in order to unite the MacPherson and Sinclair clans. As Bridgid and Ramsey grow closer, she refuses to tell him the name of her true love.

Ramsey presides over both the Sinclair and MacPherson clans. As a result, Gillian, Brodick and Ramsey venture to Ramsey’s quarters so Gillian can identify who betrayed them and to locate Christian. However, Gillian’s search comes up empty. Two of the older MacPherson clan members eventually find Christian, but she is unwilling to come face to face with Gillian. Brodick continues to press Gillian for the names of the Barons. Eventually, Gillian agrees to inform Brodick of the names so long as he waits to serve revenge until after she has completed her mission. After further inspection, Gillian ultimately identifies the traitor as a Highlander named Gideon, who once served as Ramsey’s first in command. Ramsey coerces Christian to meet with Gillian. During their meeting, Gillian learns Christian does not know where Arianna’s treasure is located. Afterwards, Brodick and Ramsey flee in order to convene with Iain in England and plot a revenge attack on Alford. When Gillian overhears the plan, she packs her belongings and sets off for England as well. In the end, Gillian has a vision of where the box is located. She sends message to King John assuring him that she knows where Arianna’s treasure is stashed, setting up events for Shadow Music.
